Understanding Your Bill
A plain-language guide to your monthly statement — what each amount, reading, charge, and term on your Rocky Gas Co-op bill actually means.

Payment optionsWhat’s Owing & When
The top portion of your statement is the remittance slip — the part that tells you what to pay and by when.
Paying by cheque? Detach the remittance slip from your bill and include it with your payment.
- Amount Now Due
- This month’s billing amount when you pay on or before the Due Date. It is the sum of your current charges plus GST.
- Due Date
- The date your Amount Now Due is payable. If it is not paid by this date, the amount owing becomes the Payment After Due Date.
- Payment After Due Date
- The higher amount owing if your payment is not made on or before the Due Date.
- Amount Paid
- You fill this in — the amount you are submitting as payment for this statement.
- Tap Number
- Rocky Gas receives natural gas through several entry points — taps — across the franchise area. Because the heat value of the gas varies by source, your statement notes which tap serves you so your billing can be adjusted for that tap’s heat value.
Your Gas Consumption
How we measure the gas you used last month and convert it into the gigajoules (GJ) you are billed for.
- Volume
- The amount of gas that passed through your meter, in thousands of cubic feet. It is the difference between the previous month’s meter reading (P. Read) and the month before that (P.P. Read).
- Metric Conversion
- A conversion factor, in decimal units, that converts your meter’s cubic-feet reading into a billing factor.
- Billing Factor
- Your Volume in cubic feet multiplied by the Metric Conversion factor. Billing Factor = Volume × Metric Conversion
- Heat Value
- The energy content of the gas delivered at your tap. Because it varies by source, it is measured per tap and used to convert your volume into gigajoules.
- GJ Consumption
- Your billed energy use, in gigajoules. It is your Volume (in cubic feet) multiplied by the Metric Conversion factor and the Heat Value. GJ Consumption = Volume × Metric Conversion × Heat Value
Cost of Gas
The charges that make up the cost of supplying and delivering your gas each month.
- Gas Usage
- The cost of the gas you used during the billing period, billed by the gigajoule.
- Transport Fee
- The cost of delivering the gas to you, billed per gigajoule used.
- Infrastructure Reserve Fund
- Money dedicated to replacing and upgrading our aging system, so we can keep gas flowing reliably to our member-owners.
- Federal Fuel Charge
- A tax paid directly to the federal government. For more information, see the Canada Revenue Agency fuel charge page.
